Housing Compatibility for the Sony a7 V

In a bold move for a camera manufacturer, Sony has managed to upgrade camera specifications without swelling the camera size or fiddling with button layout. The Sony a7 Mark V brings a new sensor, higher burst rates, an upgraded IBIS system, and enhanced autofocus abilities to a body that's already familiar to us from their a7 IV and a7R V models.

The great news for underwater shooters is that this new camera body - available now at a US retail price of $2,898 - will work seamlessly in the same Ikelite housing as its predecessor, the a7 IV, and the popular high resolution a7R V model.

The 200DL Underwater Housing # 71479 can be used with this new camera with these points in mind:

Camera Mount

The housing ships standard with two camera mounts:

Camera Mount # 95431 for Sony a7R V
Camera Mount # 95426 for Sony a7 IV

The new Sony a7 V should be used with the Camera Mount # 95431 - the same as the a7R V.

Mode Dial

The housing ships pre-configured for the a7R V camera, which has a locking Mode Dial. The new a7 V has a non-locking Mode Dial, which requires a minor modification to the corresponding control on the housing.

Simply remove the nylon screw in the center of the mode dial control on the housing using the instructions on page 13 of the housing instruction manual. This is the same modification that would be required for use with the a7 IV camera.

The Mode Dial control (indicated here with an arrow) needs a simple modification to accommodate the Sony a7 V, consult your instruction manual for details.

TTL Exposure

Add the DL2 Sony DS Link TTL Converter Kit for automatic strobe exposure with your Ikelite DS strobes and Sony a7 V camera. When used in TTL, the camera will adjust flash output based on your distance to subject. TTL flash exposure can be used in conjunction with flash exposure compensation and manual exposure settings for complete creative control.
