Sony Underwater Hybrid Shooters Herald the New a7 V!

Sony Underwater Hybrid Shooters Herald the New a7 V!

Sony announces its latest update to their a7 series - the Sony a7 V. This is Sony’s first-ever 33MP “partially stacked” full-frame sensor, meaning you can catch even more action with high burst rates! The 4K 60p full-frame video capabilities will entice those underwater hybrid/video shooters. Integrated AI technology promises improvements in both autofocus performance and white balance accuracy.

Features

33MP “partially stacked” full-frame sensor - capture more action with higher frame rates (30 fps when using electronic shutter) as well as improved dynamic range and low-light performance, a boon for underwater photographers.

Video capabilities. 4K 60p (full-sensor format) will allow videographers to slow down their footage in post to get a better sense of their subject’s movement. Improved readout speeds shows performance similar to Sony’s FX3 and a7S III cinema-focused cameras.

AI powered autofocus for better subject tracking for both photo and video. The a7 V uses a 759-point phase-detected autofocus system with subject detection (six subject type categories) and faster low-light autofocus.

AI-improved automatic white balance uses advanced learning technology to adjust to challenging lighting scenarios. Will this hold up underwater though? Time will tell if we’ll be sticking to custom white balance or not.

Improved image stabilization with 7.5 stops of correction (compared to the 5.5 stops on the a7 IV) means smoother video and sharper photos, a huge leg-up when you’re fighting movement underwater.

Better battery life with 630 shots using EVF and 750 using LCD means even more shots per dive. It’s still worth using our USB-C charging and data transfer bulkhead to top off in-between dives.
