One of the world's most mysterious nightly migration events is illuminated in Jeff Milisen's latest book, Field Guide to Blackwater Diving (2nd Edition).
"When night falls over the open ocean, a hidden world rises from the depths. Thousands of feet below the surface, delicate larval fishes, luminous jellies, drifting colonies, and strange predators begin their nightly ascent. For blackwater divers—those who descend into the open ocean after dark—these encounters reveal one of the most mysterious ecosystems on Earth."

Based on hundreds of dives and years of firsthand observations off the coast of Hawaii, Jeff Milisen introduces readers to the remarkable and seemingly otherworldly species that appear each night underwater.
This latest edition builds on the original work with 34 additional species, updated insights, and new data that will help readers rethink their understanding of the open ocean.
With award-winning imagery and detailed observations readers will not only gain the tools needed to identify species and understand blackwater ecology, but will be swept into a constantly unfolding and gripping adventure.
“This book is meant to bring the hidden biodiversity of the open ocean into the light... Many of these animals are rarely seen alive, and every dive still has the potential to reveal something completely new.”
