Travel Restrictions for Lithium Ion Batteries

Travel Restrictions for Lithium Ion Batteries

In October 2015, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced new recommendations regarding the carriage of spare lithium batteries in carry-on and checked baggage.

Our battery packs meet all current regulations for transport and incorporate multiple redundant safety features to ensure trouble-free transportation and operation. Based on the regulations in place as of January 2016, we recommend traveling with spare battery pack(s) packed in your carry-on baggage with sufficient padding to prevent crushing, puncturing, or pressure on the batteries. Ensure that the battery pack switch is in the off and locked position and the battery cover is securely in place.

Both 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Li-Ion battery packs have a Watt-hour rating of 28.86 Wh, which is within the current allowable size limitations (refer to 49 CFR § 175.10). Since these are not lithium metal batteries, the limitation of 2 grams of lithium content is not relevant to these products.

A copy of the Product Safety Data Sheet for Lithium Ion Battery Packs may also be printed and kept in your carry-on in case additional information about the pack is requested.

Regulations, policies, and recommendations continue to change. Check with the airline(s) you will be flying several weeks before packing for your trip to avoid any unpleasant surprises or loss of equipment.

In our experience, the interpretation of policies can vary widely by airline, agent, and destination. We have received reports from customers whose lithium ion batteries were confiscated by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents even when packed in carry-on baggage.

Our products are designed to provide the performance you need in the most remote locations around the world, so worry-free travel is of utmost importance to us. For added piece of mind, a conversion program is available for a limited time which provides current owners of Li-ion strobe products an opportunity to transition to NiMH battery packs and chargers.
