Nick Tearle is a lifelong nature enthusiast and advanced diver with over 20 years underwater and a media career marked by a passion for growth and learning.

In 2025 he embarked on a journey that would take him from the sardine run in Magdalena Bay through the Revillagigedo Islands and Baja California Sur. Take a dive into his tour of Mexico's most pristine underwater marine environments.

Baja California Sur

Baja California Sur was a vibrant lead-up to the deep-ocean leg of my journey. On the road to Magdalena Bay and the Revillagigedo Islands, I spent time diving in Cabo Pulmo’s protected reef system, capturing schools of jacks and thriving reef life. In La Paz, I visited the famous sea lion colony at Los Islotes — an energetic and playful highlight, with curious pups swirling in the shallows. My stop in San José del Cabo added a quieter coastal contrast, rounding out a stretch of Baja that showcases just how rich and varied this region’s marine life really is.

Magdalena Bay

In October 2025, I travelled to Magdalena Bay to witness the sardine run - one of the ocean’s most electrifying wildlife spectacles. This natural event draws in a dynamic cast of predators, from striped marlin and sea lions to mobula rays and seabirds, all converging in a hunt for sardines. I aimed to capture the raw energy and fleeting moments that define this ecosystem. This film blends underwater and topside perspectives to share the beauty and chaos of life around the sardine baitballs.

My lightweight Ikelite setup was ideal here because there was a lot of jumping in and out of the water - physically it's a challenging spectacle to witness so keeping kit minimum made it easy for me to keep up with the action.

Revillagigedo Islands

The Revillagigedo Islands, often called the "Galápagos of Mexico," are a remote volcanic archipelago teeming with big pelagics and raw ocean energy. On this trip, I focused on capturing the scale and presence of the region’s iconic marine life — including schooling hammerheads, giant mantas, and curious silvertip sharks. Filming in these deep, open waters was both a challenge and a privilege, offering a chance to document the islands’ unmatched biodiversity and the delicate balance that sustains it. This piece is a tribute to one of the wildest corners of the Eastern Pacific.

Nick's Gear

I was already familiar with the Sony alpha ecosystem, and Ikelite housings were an easy choice from their lightweight build, modularity, good value and helpful guides and customer service.
