USB-C Compatibility Info for Nikon Z8 Underwater Housings

USB-C Charging Bulkhead with Nikon Z8 Ikelite Underwater Housing

An underwater photographer's dream is to be able to set up their housing at the beginning of a shoot and never break it down until they're ready to head home. That's possible with the USB-C Charging & Data Transfer Bulkhead # 46009.

Limitations of the Nikon Z8

Unlike most other cameras on the market today, the Nikon Z8 camera does not support both charging and data transfer through the same USB-C port.

When used with the Z8, you must choose either charging or data transfer when installing the camera into the housing. Most shooters prefer to install a large memory card in the camera and use the USB-C Bulkhead for charging in between dives.

Right Angle Adapter to use USB-C Charging Bulkhead with Nikon Z8 Ikelite Underwater Housing

A right-angle adapter is required due to the limited space between the side of the camera and the inside wall of the housing.

Requirements for Attachment

There is limited room between the side of the Nikon Z8 camera and the inside wall of the underwater housing.

The USB-C Right Angle Male-to-Female Adapter 40 GBPS # 46009 is required to attach the Hyper-Flex USB-C cable to the camera inside of the housing. This adapter is not included with the purchase of the USB-C Bulkhead.

Battery Requirements

Not all Nikon battery packs support USB-C charging.

  • Battery needs to be EN-EL15B or EN-EL15C.
  • Battery EN-EL15A will not charge through USB-C.

Charger Requirements

External charging source needs to be able to deliver at least 15W.

  • Nikon’s EH-7P charger recommended.
  • Nikon’s EH-8P charger with UC-E25 USB Cable (USB-C on both ends of cable) recommended.

Cable Requirements

  • High-speed charging or data transfer requires the use of a high quality USB Type-C version 3.0 or above (not included).
  • If charging from computer, it is also recommended to utilize USB-C to USB-C cable rather than a USB-C to USB-A cable.
  • Not all USB cables are bi-polar. If charging or data transfer doesn’t occur, remove the cable on the outside of the housing, rotate 180º, and re-insert.
