This basic body was introduced as a Substrobe 150 in the late seventies, and became the workhorse for professional underwater photographers. These strobes are known for uniform recycle times and consistent intensity flash after flash. We added more power over the years, increasing the output to 225 then 300 watt seconds, but number of flashes and recycle time both suffered. Developments in electronics lead to sophisticated new circuitry able provide a full 400 watt seconds of power while providing faster recycle times and 50 more flashes than the old Substrobe 300 it replaced. This strobe body was also offered many years ago as a Substrobe 75 and Substrobe 100d that was powered by alkaline batteries. These batteries would occasionally give off some gas that caused the dome to crack because the battery compartment was not sealed. Many questions are answered in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section about non-digital Substrobes. |
