SubStrobe DS-125 Intensity

Our first big strobes 25 years ago were embraced by professional underwater photographers; but they teased us that the light was "tinny" looking, so we embarked on developing a reflector coating to soften and warm the light. The result was a special soft-lite reflector that produces softer, warmer, and more natural colors. The effect is like the soft lighting of a surface photographer aiming the strobe into a light umbrella.

The carpet pictures in a recent strobe comparison article show an intensity difference that appears greater than the measured 1/2 f/stop. Warmer color temperatures do not appear as bright as cool color temperatures. Flashlights that measure twice the intensity look yellow and dim by comparison to the cool bluish color of a HID light for example. But, the warm colors must be captured when photographed. Computer programs like PhotoShop can not enhance the red color channel of a photograph if it does not contain any red.

The DS-125 is larger as it provides 33% more electrical energy than the next most powerful strobe in the article, and provides phenomenal recycle time and number of flashes besides powering a bright aiming light. The DS-125 will provide the same intensity and one second recycle time after 100 flashes as it does on its first flash. The other strobes are designed to operate on primary cell batteries and intensity will be about one stop less when their ready light first signals. Several additional seconds will be required for full intensity, intensity will diminish after fifty flashes, and recycle time will increase.
