Comparing Substrobe 200 to YS-120

This is an apples to oranges comparison since the only real similarity may be the suggested retail price. Compare the following standard features:

Substrobe 200

  • Output: 200 watt-seconds
  • Recycle time: less than 2 seconds
  • Power settings: 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, Full

  • Modeling light
  • Battery fuel gauge
  • Rechargeable battery included

  • TTL slave available
  • Compatible with all Nikon SLR cameras

  • Actual underwater GN of 38
All Ikelite Substrobes provide Nikonos type functions like blinking the camera ready light when ISO is set over 400; providing full power flash when strobe is set to TTL and the camera is set to M-90; and locking the shutter speed at 1/90 when the strobe is turned on. Substrobe 200 can utilize our Smart Charger that is not affected by inconsistent input voltages.
YS-120

  • Output: Less than 85 watt-seconds
  • Recycle time: 4 seconds
  • Power settings: 1/2, Full

  • NO Modeling light
  • NO Battery fuel gauge
  • Rechargeable battery optional

  • NO TTL slave available
  • Compatible with certain Nikon SLR cameras (see owner manual page 18)

  • Actual underwater GN of 33
Their four-second recycle time becomes longer after each flash without optional rechargeable batteries. Intensity difference between center and 45 degrees (90 degree coverage) is over one f/stop, the normal standard for coverage claims. Adding a diffuser further reduces intensity. The YS-120 will not be compatible with Nikonos strobes when attached to an Ikelite "T" connector.

The watt-second rating represents the actual electrical energy that is available to flash the strobe. This rating is comparable to horsepower in an automobile or watts in a light bulb. Note that the SubStrobe 200 is more than twice as powerful as the YS-120.
