"Clamming It Up on the G.B.R."

This year I turned 40. Like many people of my generation, I spent some of my youth watching diver Mike Nelson battling evil under the waves. I would lean in particularly close when Mike would find himself caught in the grip of the dangerous giant clam.
Imagine my surprise to discover, on my first dive on the Great Barrier Reef at Kerry's Mooring, that the cold, uncolored monsters of my childhood were instead benign creatures of the most vibrant colors. Although huge (I can fit my 5'11" frame into a vacant shell) a living giant clam is more iridescent and colorful than the most precious opal.
